No stranger to the Martha's Vineyard music scene, Kim has been
performing as an acoustic singer-songwriter, as well as in several bands,
on-island and off for over 20 years.
Born and raised in the suburbs of Boston, MA., Kim began playing
guitar at the age of 13, and she began writing songs at 15. By 17, she
recorded her first song and played live.
In Kim’s later teen years, she could be found absorbing live music at
coffeehouses and music venues in the Cambridge and Boston area, at the
time when Boston and the rest of the country was experiencing the
thriving atmosphere of “Acoustic/Singer/Songwriter” music in the late
‘80’s. When not at coffeehouses, Kim could be found moshing (back when it was slamdancing) at some of Boston’s finer punk-rock clubs.
In 1990, Kim moved to the Island of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, where
she
became very involved in the local music scene. From 1990 to 1993, Kim
played bass with the all-original rock band The
Endorfins, with "Rock & Roll" Rick Padilla (The Mercy Beat) on vocals, Kim Taylor on
drums, Jimmy Warren and Keith Estes on guitar. The Endorfins won the
local "Battle of the Bands" in 1991 at the Atlantic Connection, and in
1992 tied with "The Strangemen". The Endorfins' "First Crack" EP
cassette sold out locally. In 1992, drummer Kim Taylor moved
off-Island, and Andy Thurlow took over the throne until the Endorfin's
disbanded in 1993.
During those same years, Kim played congas and sang with the Afro-Latin
drum ensemble, "Die Kunst Der Drum". Anyone who was on the island
during those summers no doubt remembers the weekly sunset beach
concerts! DKDD had a song included on Peter Simons' "The Vineyard
Sound, Vol. I" recording.
In 1995, Kim formed
the (original) Bathtub Mary, with Kim on guitar and vocals, Graham
Allen
on bass and Allen Flurry
on drums. They recorded a few songs Jimmy Parr's studio, including "I Wanna
Be A Lesbian" and "Driving Home". Bathtub Mary also played a few
local
gigs. Bathtub Mary disbanded when Alan moved off-Island.
Bathtub Mary had a brief second incarnation in 2001 with Graham
Allen on bass, (Kim) Taylor Rome on drums and John Peters on guitar. (There is no affilliation with the MV/NoHo band calling themselves Bathtub Mary, ...thanks alot, Dennis.....but, that's another story...)
Ah, but I digress.... Right! Back to the '90's and to the Bio.... But Kim’s main passion and focus was on her own music. Kim began playing regularly at the (now defunct) Wintertide Coffeehouse’s Open Mike night,
as well as becoming a Wintertide volunteer, running the sound mix for
open mic and other mainstage shows. Kim performed solo often from 1993
through 1997, opening for performers such as Peter Mulvey, Erica Wheeler, Dayna Kurtz, Chandler Travis, Max Cohen and McKinley Black.
Kim’s music was featured on WMVY's, “Local Music Show”, and “Private
Collection” with host Peter Simon. Kim was featured in a live interview
on KMUD's “Women on Wednesdays” in Garberville, California, and opened for local
favorite Kevin Keady at the Iron Horse Music Hall in North Hampton, MA.
Kim also backed various local performers on drums, bass or
vocals like Kevin Keady, Justen Ahren, Corrine Delangevant. Kim
has songs on local recordings “Wintertide's 4th Annual
Singer/Songwriter Retreat” compilation and the recent
“Save Our Woods”
compilation CD. Kim has
been guest vocalist
on Kevin Keady’s “Catch and Release” CD;
and the “Island Children’s School”
CD.
In 1996/1997, Kim gathered (almost) all her songs-to-date, and headed
into the studio. At AKME studios in Chelmsford, MA, and with the help
of friends Paul Ortolano, Steve Bears, Jimmy Warren and McKinley Black,
Kim recorded 23 original songs on 2 albums, “Sidewalk
Offerings” and “Home”. These 2 albums were originally released on
cassette, and are now available on CD.
In 1997,
Kim took a year off and went to California, to persue training and a career in massage therapy.
Kim returned to the Island in 1998, playing a few solo shows, and
starting to work on her 3rd album in 1999. With the end of the
Wintertide Coffehouse in 1998, leaving an enormous void in the music
community, there was not much opportunity to play solo shows. Kim again
began the search for a bass player and a drummer, but for years that took a back seat to building her massage practice.
Now, since 2005, with "Slim" Bob Berosh (Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, The Strangemen, Dogwood) on guitar and Chris Seidel (The Stingrays, Maynard Silva) on drums, Kim dusted off her bass, warmed up her voice, and together they formed SUGARBOWL. In 2007, SUGARBOWL released their first full length (13 song) debut CD.
Kim’s music can be described as personal, passionate, percussive, and
not always acoustic. Somewhere between raw and refined, folk and punk
is where Kim’s music travels.
Her influences cannot be tied down, ranging from
acoustic/ singer/ songwriter music to raw punk, heavy rock and classical;
and, consequently her music cannot seem to sit still in one category or
another either. From soft, melodic songs like “Toast” and “I Saw You”,
to percussive-acoustic songs like “Silence” and “Another Love Song”, to
very driving, edgy and somewhat poppy songs like “the Cleaning
Song,” “Driving Home” and “I Wanna Be A Lesbian”, Kim’s music has
a hard time finding either definition, category, or boredom among her
listeners. Kim’s instrument of choice cannot be nailed down either, as
Kim jumps from acoustic to electric guitars, bass, drums and
percussion, and a hint of keyboards.
