THE NOISE- NOVEMBER 2007
SUGARBOWL
13-song CD
Heartfelt. That’s the first adjective that appeared in my mind
regarding Kim’s musical work, direct from the Vineyard (Martha’s
Vineyard for you cretins). I know, it’s a rock mag and that word is too
flaccid to start out a review. Some excellent guitar work heats up this
album, and the balance of the instrumentation is right on. I’m a sucker
for good guitar work. Kim’s vocals have a sexy, sultry quality that at
times reminds one of Kim Gordon. There’s also an element of a Breeders’
type affirmative languidity (say that phrase five time quickly) within
some of the denser song structures. “Motorcycle” is a raring, ripping
’50s Link Wrayish rave up that makes one want to turn away the latte
and grab the whiskey (if that’s your thing). I can understand how a
certified massage therapist would want to let it rock out after awhile;
I’m sure rubbing down all those bodies creates a buildup of energy that
needs to be channeled in a positive way. (Mike Loce)
MARTHA'S VINEYARD TIMES
May 25, 2006
"Local acts are heating up the live music scene now, before the influx of big-name bands floods the clubs and pubs.
Sugarbowl, the rock and blues trio formed by bassist Kim Hilliard,
guitarist Slim Bob, and drummer Chris Seidel, begins a string of
performances at The Ritz and Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs. The band
performs Ms. Hilliard's original songs, traversing the musical
landscape from punk rock and blues to alternative ballads. Ms. Hilliard
recently recorded a dozen original tracks with the outfit, which will
be appearing on an upcoming CD. In addition, she has several CDs of
solo material and often incorporates these songs into Sugarbowl's sets.
Sugarbowl
performs at the Ritz May 25 and Offshore Ale on May 26. The Offshore
performance is for all ages. Nina Violet, Colin Ruel, and Alex
Karalekas perform at the Arts District Exchange on May 28. Doors open
at 7 pm. The all-ages show is free of charge.
Julian Wise is a frequent contributor to The Times, specializing in music, film, and the performing arts." (By Julian Wise - Music Short/Hot Talent)
Here’s what else people are saying,
...have said,
...or might say
about Kim and her music:
“I like to start the series (of performances) with a local performer
who is a strong songwriter,” says Tony (Lombardi, Wintertide
Coffeehouse). Kim Hilliard will open the first mainstage event on
Friday, Sept. 15 (1995). Kim is a Vineyarder whose musical endeavors
have included stints with the Endorfins, Die Kunst Der Drum, and
numerous sit-ins with the likes of spunky McKinley Black. She has
worked hard on honing her songwriting skills, according to Tony, and
Kim is eager and ready.” -Martha's Vineyard Times, September 14, 1995
September Singer/Songwriter Showcase
“Kim sings original compositions that reflect her amazing musical talent and insightful views of life.” -Barbara Dupree/Martha's Vineyard Times,
1998 or 1999 or 2000 First Night Celebration
“You said something...that was really important” -PJ Harvey, not referring in any way to Kim or her music
“...punk-folk songstress, Kim Hilliard...” -Martha's Vineyard Times
“Kim’s music can be described as personal, passionate, percussive, and
not always acoustic. Somewhere between raw and refined, folk and punk
is where kim’s music travels.” -Blitz Fury
“...folk-rock songstress...” -Kevin Keady
“...along with Kim Hilliard’s thumping bass... Kim’s sultry
voice, heard only briefly on “Bedroom Eyes” and sounding remarkably
like the Pretenders’ Chrissy Hynde. She should sing more often.” -Martha's Vineyard Times, December 12, 1991
“Kim Hilliard’s booming bass defied her small frame” -Martha's Vineyard Times, April 18, 1991
“...with Kim Hilliard on bass and vocals.” -Martha's Vineyard Times, February 28, 1991
(I Personally LOVE that one!)
“Kim is my friend” -my friend Steve
“ The Endorfins opened with brash rock ‘n’ roll, fronted by Rick
Padilla, one of Martha’s Vineyard’s certified heavy-metal balladeers.
Kim Hilliard adds to the roster of women bassists on the Island...” -Martha's Vineyard Times, February 28, 1991
“A navy bean is bigger than it seems. Put it on and don’t ask what it means” -Tracy Bonham. Again, not referring in any way to kim or her music.
In fact, I don’t know WHAT she’s referring to.
“Kimmeeee frikin’ rocks” -Paul Ortolano,
AKME Recording, Psycho Serious (Now Serial Thrillers)
(ok, I paid him to say that...)
